CHAPTER 9

ANDREW

After a shower and quick breakfast, I hurry back to the studio. Casually passing the set department, it doesn't look like anyone is there.

Even though my office is exactly the way I left it, everything is different. Last night I'd simply intended to walk around the building, brainstorming new projects. Instead, my life was changed forever.

Automatically reaching for my phone when I think about Jaelyn, I remember again that I don't have her number. How could I be so stupid? Well, she did rush me out when I was not at my sharpest. I assume she has today off, but I'll find her soon enough.

Sasha gives me a very strange look when she comes into my office with my second coffee at ten-thirty sharp. "Brad in HR asked if you'd be available for a quick meeting, sir."

"Of course. Send him in."

Five minutes later, a very timid man in a gray suit sits down in front of my desk. "What can I do for you?" I ask.

"I just wanted to assure you that we're already taking care of things," he says nervously. "Everything's being swept under the rug. You know. Handled."

I blink at him. "What's being handled?"

He pulls at the cuffs of his sleeves. "Your, um, shall we say, private meeting last night, sir. In the set department."

My back and shoulders stiffen. "Please tell me precisely what you're talking about."

My directness seems to take him by surprise. "The security camera showed that you were in that room together with the young lady for around eight hours. Since you don't really have any other business there, assumptions were made. Then Elaine witnessed…" Brad coughs delicately. "Some, er, clear physical affection, sir."

He leans forward, his slight smile unsteady. "All of the staff have signed NDAs, and we can make sure that hers covers any interoffice…indiscretions. As the CEO, naturally the regular rules don't apply to you. It happens all the time. We assume that you might want her to be removed, so we're already preparing for that contingency."

"What the fuck?" I stare at him in disbelief. "I spent some time with an employee and you want to fire her?"

Brad leans back in his chair. "If you'd like her to stay, of course that's fine too. We're here to accommodate you. We can change her hours, if you would like…regular meetings with her, sir."

What the actual fuck? My HR Manager is now pimping for me?!

"Do you know what she was doing in that studio last night?" I roar. "Painting a bunch of set pieces that they needed done for this morning. Multiple coats of paint, plus drying time, on massive panels. It was a job that should have been given to three people. Instead, they dumped it all on the new girl. If I hadn't wandered by and offered to help, it wouldn't have been done in time."

I feel a certain satisfaction at the look of shock on Brad's face. "Oh! I'm so sorry to have jumped to conclusions, sir."

I'm already on my feet.
